Breakfast Club

Open to all middle grade students. Students meet twice a month for breakfast and conversation in the school gym at 7:00 a.m. A small fee will be charged. Students may sign up at the beginning of the school year. Look for notices in the weekly family envelope and on your monthly school calendar.

M.U.S.E.

M.U.S.E. has been in business since 1986, bringing quality music instruction to both private and public schools. Many staff members not only teach, but perform professionally, sharing the art of performance with students on a very personal level. The cost of taking lessons from M.U.S.E. is about half the cost of private instruction. Visit our website: www.museband.com.

Operation Brainstorm

During their lunch break, Eighth Grade volunteers tutor students from First through Fourth Grade. This is done on a one-to-one basis and/or in small groups in their homeroom. Under a teacher's supervision, the volunteers reinforce Math and Language Arts skills.

Kindergarten Operation Brainstorm (KOB)

During their lunch break, Eighth Grade volunteers visit the Kindergarten classroom. They work with an assigned student to reinforce academic skills.

Peer Tutoring

After school tutoring is open to all students at St. Joseph School. Tutoring is provided Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 3:00-4:00 p.m. in the 4th and 5th Grade classrooms. Extended Care students may attend tutoring after signing into Extended Care. For emergency and accountability purposes all students must sign in and out of the tutoring room upon entering and exiting.

Student Council

The St. Joseph Student Council promotes leadership, school unity, and spirit. All students are members. The council officers and classroom representatives meet during lunch in the gym. They are responsible for daily morning assemblies, monthly student body spirit assemblies, and Student Council sponsored events such as Faith Family Welcome Lunch, Spirit Days, Catholic Schools Week Fair and Mass, Middle School Dances, and the Talent Show.

Students in Grades 5-7 may submit their portfolio in order to be considered for appointment as a Student Council Chairperson in early May. Faculty members and current Student Council members conduct interviews. All students interested in applying must be in good academic standing.

Traffic Patrol

Students from 6th Grade serve before and after school directing traffic and providing safety instruction for students. This very necessary school patrol provides opportunities for leadership and the development of responsibility. Students on Traffic Patrol duty receive service hours towards the minimum requirement.

Yearbook

The Yearbook Committee is open to students in Grades 6-8. Students work to design and edit the school yearbook. Students who wish to serve on the committee turn in Yearbook Committee portfolios during the month of May. Students are chosen by the faculty advisor and principal and must be in good academic standing.

Activities

Altar Serving

Students in Grades 4-8 may be trained to serve their school and parish community as altar servers for school and parish masses. The parish provides training during the year.

Field Trips

Field trips are of educational or cultural value and are directly related to the curriculum. We rely on parent drivers to enable us to provide these enriching experiences. Parents volunteering to drive on field trips are required by California State Law to have a chest X-ray or TB skin test verification on file in the school office. A copy of the parent’s driver’s license and proof of insurance must also be on file in the school office. Volunteer drivers must be at least 25 years old and chaperones must be 21 years old. The classroom teacher must approve all adults on field trips.

Junior High Dances

Students in Grades 7-8 may participate in school-sponsored dances if they are not on academic probation and if they have not lost school privileges due to Rule Violations (See Discipline). The Student Council sponsors school dances and guidelines are sent home before the event. Parents and students must sign a behavior contract before they will be able to attend. Other schools in the Root Community may be invited, and students are sometimes invited to attend dances at Root school sites as well.

Faith Families and Buddies

Students in Grades K-8 are placed into Faith Families at the beginning of the school year. These families contain a student from each grade level. During the school year these families get together for social events to build school spirit, and work on school and community outreach projects together. In addition to school families, every grade is partnered with another grade for religious, social, and academic functions.
