The technology program
At St. Joseph School we focus on integrating technology with classroom curriculum. In compliance with the philosophy of the Oakland Diocese, we will be aligning with the new standards created by the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE).

Typing
Kingergarten, First and Second grade students learn the keyboard using a phonics-based program called Read, Write and Type. Students are introduced to All The Right Type in third grade. Diocesan guidelines show the goal for Eighth Grade graduating students to be typing at a minimum speed of 25 words per minute, with 90% accuracy.

Internet
Students are supervised during their time using the Internet. Most often students use sites that are specifically assigned for a project. Students may also search for sites to do research for a project. As per National and Diocesan guidelines, all internet access is filtered.

Software
Students use many kinds of software throughout their time at the school, including these: Productivity, Concept-Mapping, Digital Art, Graphing, Reference, Browsers, Multimedia, Presentation, Spreadsheet, Web Page Creation and Word-Processing.

In Kindergarten the students focus primarily on using Intellitools Studio to create drawings and stories. Kindergarteners also use Read, Write and Type, a phonics-based pre-typing program. They go to Internet sites that connect with their classroom studies.

In First Grade students continue to use Intellitools to illustrate stories and create their own slide show. They continue to use Read, Write and Type. They go to Internet sites that connect with their classroom studies.

In Second Grade students advance to adding music and recording their own voice in their slide show using Intellitools Studio. In their last year of Read, Write and Type they aspire to reach the tenth level in the program. They go to internet sites that connect with their classroom studies.

In Third Grade students begin learning real-world typing skills using All The Right Type. Students are introduced to word processing with IWork. They begin online research, looking for information and images. They create a slideshow using PowerPoint.

In Fourth Grade students continue typing. Their word processing skills continue to improve; they may format a brochure and insert graphics. They create graphic organizers using Inspiration, and continue to use the Internet to supplement their research needs.

In Fifth Grade students continue typing, hone their skills in IWork, and learn to use eZedia QTI to create a multimedia presentation. They create a PowerPoint slide show, and learn to work independently to prepare for middle school. They learn to competently use the Internet for research and projects. They independently download their files from the AlphaSmart word processors onto the computer and edit the files in IWork. They are able to organize and manage their files. They create graphic organizers using Inspiration. They are also introduced to a writing-process program called Writer's Companion.

In Sixth Grade students continue typing, and complete research and online lessons. They use eZedia QTI to create presentations based on their research. They use IWork to word process their reflections for their portfolios. Students create project-related mind maps using Inspiration. They use PowerPoint for slide shows, and illustrate science concepts using drawing tools. They create a web page for a science project. They do online projects using science and math skills. They continue to learn the writing process using Writer's Companion.

Seventh Grade students continue typing, and complete research and online lessons. They use eZedia QTI to create presentations based on their research. They use IWork to word process their reflections for their portfolios. They use PowerPoint for slide shows, and illustrate science concepts using drawing tools. They do online projects using science and math skills. They refine their technology skills and work independently. They continue to learn the writing process using Writer's Companion.

In Eighth Grade students continue typing, and complete research and online lessons. Eighth graders also create a slideshow using iMovie which is presented at graduation.
