Welcome to the St. Joseph Middle School Language Arts/Literature program. My name is Alicia Ortegon and I am the Sixth Grade Homeroom, Middle School Language Arts and Literature teacher, and Assistant Vice-Principal. I attended both Elementary and Middle School in the Oakland Diocese and am now in my fifteenth year of teaching. I have a Bachelors Degree in Anthropology from Cal State East Bay, a cleared California Teaching Credential, a Masters Degree in Teaching from USF, and an Administrative Credential from Saint Mary’s College. I love teaching here at St. Joseph School!
All Middle School students will begin the literature course by reading a novel as a class. We will work on daily reading logs, set goals, and review and discuss various literary components. Each grade will begin with the following books:
Sixth Grade- Tuck Everlasting
Seventh- The Outsiders
Eighth- My Brother Sam is Dead
Students will also participate in a literacy component called “Literature Circles.” Students are placed in groups of 5 or 6, and perform various roles to complete a group report. Each group reads a book, both independently and as a group. Students’ roles include Discussion Director, Time Keeper, Investigator, Illustrator, and Word Wizard. Each group member completes an individual log and a self-evaluating rubric. Lit Circles encourage good time management practices, cooperation, literary discussion, and encourage students to share their thoughts, feelings, and reactions to their chosen literature in a small group setting.
Middle School students will also be required to participate in the Young Author’s Fair sponsored by the Diocese of Oakland each spring. Students will create an original book. They will receive all details and information regarding this project in class. St. Joseph students have won numerous awards at this event.
All students will continue to develop and refine their Grammar and Vocabulary skills. They will complete daily assignments in both their English workbook and Vocabulary book. Each Vocabulary unit will take about two weeks to complete and will conclude with an assessment that will evaluate how well they understand the meaning of the word and its spelling. We will also work toward becoming proficient in using the Writing Process and developing specific writing traits. A Writing Expectations handout has been given to all students.
I communicate primarily through email, however, Monday Folders, the school website, phone calls, notes, and parent conferences are also ways for me to inform families of upcoming events.
